Watercress

Is a native to Europe, Watercress has small oval shaped leaves and a deep green appearance. It has a hot peppery flavour and iis used to add crunch to a salad or to simply compliment a meal, such as fish,or steak. A proven  super food watercress is rich in vitamins C, B1, B6, K and E, iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese and zinc.

Watercress is a modern super food and has been grown commercially in the pure spring waters of Southern England since the early 1800s.

A member of the cabbage family and botanically related to garden cress and mustard, Watercress is said to have many nutritional benefits. It is believed to act as a mild stimulant, is a source of  antioxidants, is a diuretic, an expectorant and a digestive aid. It also appears to have cancer-suppressing properties. Gram for gram, watercress provides as much vitamin C as oranges; more calcium than whole milk and more iron than spinach. Watercress is one of the oldest known leaf vegetables consumed by humans.

Watercress has been in the British diet for hundreds of years. It was originally a staple part of the working mans diet and most often eaten in a sandwich at breakfast. If the family was too poor to buy bread, they would eat it on its own and so watercress became known as the poor mans bread !not anymore ,make a watercress  sandwich now with egg or cheese add a dash of vinegar , delicious!!


Watercress is brimming with over 15 vitamins and minerals, gram for gram containing more vitamin C than oranges, more calcium than milk and more iron than spinach. Research is also highlighting its role in the fight against cancer. The results of a new study being conducted by the University of Southampton into watercress’s potential ability to suppress breast cancer cell development were announced on in September 2010.
